What began as a means to examine themes of identity and fantasy has developed into an intimate way for Erin Frost to both explore and aim for a sense of control over her own self-awareness. By perpetually exposing and disguising herself she finds a route to come to terms with the made-up idea of self. This ongoing reinvention through self-portraits seeks to strike a balance between pleasure and restriction, power and surrender, passion and absurdity. Told through stills and forbidden glances where the artist is at once obscured and revealed, these transformative vignettes erase the boundary between what happens behind and in front of the lens. Her recent work with embroidery and collage continues this reinvention–destroying precious, labored over prints before altering and reconstructing them.
